Grimes- A Great Place for VETERANS to Call HOME!!

The community of Grimes, Iowa is proud to be an official Home Base Iowa Community. This initiative is to ensure that Grimes is doing everything that they can to be welcoming to military members and their families as they leave military service and transition to a civilian lifestyle.

Benefit  Description 
Building Permit Fees Waived/Refunded The building permit fee for all new homes or home remodels shall be waived or refunded upon purchase of a new home. (Water and sewer connection fees are not refundable) This also includes Decks, Fences, Sheds, and Pools. 
Property Tax Rebate ***Home must have been purchased after August 11, 2015 to qualify for rebate.***
After the purchase of a home, a tax rebate of up to $1000 of the portion paid to the city each year for the first five years. The check shall be issued in November of each year upon receiving proof of the paid tax receipt by the veteran showing that the taxes for his/her home have been paid and are current. Veteran must reside at property.
Free Garbage and Recycling Services  Free garbage and recycling pick up for all veterans who are homeowners. 
Free Fire & EMS Services  The City will waive any and all fire and EMS fees incurred by the veteran or immediate family members.  (fees waived are fees due after submitting bill to insurance) 
Grimes Park & Rec program credits  Veterans will receive $200 credit per year towards any Parks & Recreation programs administered by the City of Grimes to be used by the veteran or immediate family members.
Military Service Recognition Plaque  A military service plaque will be established. Each veteran’s name will be placed on this plaque which title reads: “Grimes is proud to be called home to these honored veterans.” 

To take advantage of these benefits, veterans must register with the City of Grimes. Proof of veteran status is required. Acceptable forms of proof include: DD214 form, Iowa driver’s license with veteran designation, or military ID card.
If a veteran is deceased, the veteran’s immediate family may still receive these benefits.
